009: How I Sell Books, Part 1

Aaaand we’re splitting the episode in half again. These things are like Tribbles, I swear. I promise the discussion of my creative process will finally END with the next episode…though hopefully you’ve been enjoying it. 😀

Also, we are back to a weekly release schedule! Part 2 of this episode will be released next Wednesday, April 18.

(BTW, I have no idea why the show notes for the last episode said that this episode would be released on Saturday April 14…sorry for the confusion.)

One more thing–please pardon the brief moments of background noise you’ll hear now and then in this episode. The Puppy was trying to rearrange the furniture behind me. She wants to be an interior decorator when she grows up. (So at least it’s cute background noise.)

Some of the stuff I discuss in this episode:

  • The stuff I forgot to discuss in the last episode (paperback pricing and direct sales)
  • Why I break all the rules of marketing
  • Whether book launches are necessary
    • I mean, obviously you have to release the book or none of this will actually happen to begin with, I just mean the heavily-promoted-launch model, and I’ll stop talking now
  • The pros, cons, and in-between of paid advertising (and why I choose not to use it at all)

“These things are like Tribbles” – hahahahaahaha!!! Tribbles are so fluffy, though! 😀

I love Tribbles! XD That episode will always be one of my favorites.

Mine, too! It was one of the first I ever saw. (A couple of my uncles are massive ST fans, so I was about 6, I think.)

It had some great snark from Kirk, as I recall. I think I saw it for the first time when I was a teenager. Used to be a really passionate Trekkie back then, but Doctor Who kinda took over after I discovered it. XD I still really enjoy going back to Trek from time to time, though. It’s a fun fandom.

Though I haven’t ventured into Discovery thus far. It looks a little meh to me, but I suppose I could be wrong.

Yes, it is! I haven’t liked the spinoffs, though — Enterprise and Discovery are way, way beyond my final frontier, and realistically staying that way.

I did like some of Enterprise, but only after it got over trying to be the edgy new kid on the block and started honoring the established mythology more. And it never really got over some of its hang-ups. (That HORRENDOUS theme song, for example–it’s almost worse than Smallville’s, and that’s saying a lot.) Some of the stuff I’ve heard about Discovery intrigues me, but I’ve heard a lot of other stuff that puts me off getting invested in it. I must confess, I did like Voyager and Deep Space Nine.

Oh good. I thought I was the only one who doesn’t understand how to efficiently go about Facebook or Amazon ads. lol!! I’ve only done Facebook ads once and that was more than enough for me. Enjoyed this episode. And I should go listen to more. lol! Looking forward to next week’s!

Thanks so much!! Very happy you enjoyed it. Yeah, I tried delving into all that and just ended up saying to myself, “Life is too short.” XD

Like Tribbles! XD *laughing so hard* I look forward to listening to this time, sometime when I’m not busy editing a certain snarky centaur’s story. XD *downloads and saves for later* I’m definitely curious how you market and stuff! 😀 (Cute noise is always good.)

LOL, thank you! 😀 No rush, take your time. I don’t get into the more useful stuff (at least I *hope* it’s useful) until Part 2 anyway.

I’m really enjoying your broadcasts because you gently question the received wisdom and show what worked for you. It’s giving me lots of ideas!

Thank you so much! I’m really glad you’re finding them helpful!
