A Few Changes to My Weekly Schedule

This is going to be the first of several important announcement posts this week, all of which will be wrapped up in my (very late, sorry) April newsletter in a few days. And don't worry, none of these announcements are bad. I have a lot of exciting news to share with you, so I'm breaking it down into chunks instead of cramming it all into one post.

I've been fairly quiet online recently, but it is for a very good reason. I was away all last week in beautiful Sandpoint, Idaho, for the sole purpose of getting Beaumont and Beasley Book 4 finished! Which…I did not actually succeed in doing, but I'm very close. Way closer than I was the week before. (I was literally writing 10,000 words per day at my peak speed, so that should give you some idea of the progress I've made.)

The trip also gave me a chance to sit back, take a deep breath, and re-evaluate my writing/work schedule. The main thing that struck me about it is that it's kinda over-stuffed. This wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that I really need to get some things done well before Realm Makers in July. My primary goals are:

  • Complete the final draft of Horseman (with the help of Deborah O'Carroll's amazing editing skills) and publish it on Amazon and paperback
  • Republish all Beaumont and Beasley paperbacks in 5×8 trim size instead of 6×9 (I know this seems unimportant, but I think it will make the paperbacks look a little better)
  • Finish The Strange Cases of Beaumont and Beasley and publish it
  • Start my merchandise store
  • Update this website (to fix outdated book pages and stuff like that)

These are the things I definitely want to get done pre-Realm-Makers. I have some other stuff I might try to do beforehand as well, such as posting Deadwood on Wattpad in its entirety and writing the first draft of The Thirteenth Knight. But, I don't want to set unreasonable expectations for what I can get done in that amount of time.

With all that in mind, I have to admit that I've over-committed a little too much with all the stuff I do on a weekly basis. Something will have to be sidelined for a while if I'm to keep up with my goals. I don't want to pause my book reviews (because they're an important part of my author platform) or Deadwood (because it's fun). So the Fearless Fiction podcast will have to go on hiatus for a little while; probably until July. It will definitely come back, though. I plan to bank up some episodes during the hiatus so that I'm not behind the 8-ball any more when I produce it. And I already have plans for four new installments that will draw writing lessons from the strengths and weaknesses of some movies and TV shows: The Last Jedi, Infinity War, Doctor Who, and Once Upon a Time. One way or another, the podcast will return in July, hopefully with some live material recorded at Realm Makers. (Note: My Patreon page will be paused during the hiatus, so my patrons won't be charged while the podcast is inactive.)

One other, minor change–new chapters of Deadwood will now be posted on Thursdays. This just fits better with my schedule than uploading new chapters on Tuesdays. There may be a Tuesday chapter here and there if I manage to get two installments ready within one week. But other than that, I'll stick to one per week for the time being so that my other projects don't suffer.

And that's it. Mostly boring stuff today, but I have much cooler news coming up tomorrow and Wednesday. Tomorrow, I want to share with you about a couple of awards that The Beast of Talesend has been nominated for (one of which you can vote on!). And on Wednesday, I will at long last reveal the final cover for The Strange Cases of Beaumont and Beasley, as well as the final story synopses for all six novelettes collected in the book.

GASP, how can you be putting off the podcast?! How in the world will I survive until July without your sage advice?! Not totally kidding – honestly, something you said recently really helped me break my writer’s block on the Volume 3 revisions. But, yes, I do understand that time seems to be moving faster than we want it to, especially with regards to RM, and I know I feel incredibly unprepared for what has to be completed. Though I work towards it every day…

And, yeah, totally agree about focusing on the things that your readers expect more or seem to receive better – even if it means putting on hold other stuff you really want to explore. It’s part of why I’m concentrating on adding my book reviews on Goodreads, but sticking to creating discussion posts for the blog, and just putting general updates on life on Twitter. This formula responds to what seems to work best most of the time on each platform. And when I’m strapped for time, a working formula is key.

So, I sent you an email, too, about Lorehaven Magazine – and I know we have RM stuff to discuss, too, so we’ll get to all of that. (You are TOO lucky, getting to spend a week away writing!)

XD XD I’m really happy you’ve been finding the podcast helpful! I’m looking forward to getting back into it as soon as possible; it’s fun to make. I just know that if I say “I have time for ALL THE THINGS” today, I’ll suddenly wake up and discover that it’s the day before RM and I don’t have anything ready yet. Which is exactly what happened last year, and I definitely don’t want to go through that again. But don’t worry, I know you’ll have all your stuff ready on time. I’m so looking forward to Volume 3!

I need to do what you do and come up with a stricter formula for time management. Right now, I still feel like social media is leeching away too much of my productive time. I gotta find a way to cut back on that without actually hurting my business. I’ve eliminated Facebook almost entirely from my routine, but the siren song of Twitter is still an issue. XD

*Thanks for putting on the pressure* Kidding, I know you do have faith in me, and realistically, I am better at managing my schedule than I think/worry I am not. Yes, cutting out what truly isn’t necessary in a certain season is essential! Even if other people may be disappointed about it. (And then you just have to learn how to live with the guilt of that XD :P)

Yeah, I’ve cut way back on FB, too, though it’s the only place some of my relatives follow me (online), so I do still post occasional updates there, for their sake. And Twitter can inadverently be addictive!! Lately I’ve been getting a little frustrated with it (with the site, not the people – she hurries to throw in so no one unfollows her), but it’s been technical or algorithim issues… And the reason it means I reduce my time spent on there is because I *am* busy with lots of other things, and I want to devote myself to those tasks more. However, I definitely notice (in terms of self-pub author promo) when I’m “radio silent” for “too long.” So, yeah, it requires a delicate balance.

It’s so hard!! *cries on your shoulder* I’m fine. Really. XD I think I need to do something clever with Twitter, like designating a specific day of the week when I respond to all mentions/replies/so forth, instead of trying to keep up with them daily or even every other day. That just messes up my schedule way too much. Although my Twitter interactions are highly enjoyable, and it’s totally my fault if I waste time; not other people’s fault. Please don’t unfollow me, persons reading this.

Yeah, it’s so hard to figure out the time thing!!! Twitter is awesome for connecting easily with people, and it’s not necessarily a time waster if we help build our base! But it’s faaaar too easy to “go down the rabbit hole” and before you know it, there went an hour and a half we could’ve been doing something else (like writing)! I knooooow the pain!

It’s like the Hydra. Chop off one notification, and 44 more grow in its place. XD
