Blackfire, Book 1: Title, Cover, and Synopsis Reveal

Am I doing this today because I'm ever-so-slightly jealous of all the people who are having a marvelous time at Realm Makers 2019 without me?

Possibly. I will admit to nothing.

I've been working hard on Book 1 of the Blackfire series over the past few weeks, as my Camp NaNoWriMo project. Yeah, I know I worked on it for my NaNoWriMo project last November, but I wasn't thrilled with how that draft was turning out, for various reasons, so I started it over from scratch. And it's coming along very nicely.

So I think it's time to reveal some stuff about this book. The original title wasΒ The Thirteenth Knight, but I've gone with something a little more exciting in this new version.

The Dark ExcaliburBlackfire, Book 1: The Dark Excalibur

There is a legend which says the sword of King Arthur rests in its stone, awaiting one who shares the strength and goodness of Arthur to pull it free and save Camelot from great peril.

The legend is true. Someday, Excalibur will be found, and a new hero will rise.

But not today.

Because there's a second sword. A corrupted blade of twisted, evil magic belonging to the man responsible for the Old Kingdom's fall.

It's 1816 Ever After in the United Kingdom of Camelot…and the wicked knight Mordred has returned.

Fortunately, Malcolm Blackfire, the man who defeated him long ago, is still around. Even better, he has two qualities which are sorely needed right now: he's an archaeologist, and he's a dragon.

There's just one problem.

Malcolm Blackfire doesn't remember who he is.

An amnesiac dragon and an unscrupulous jewel thief are the only ones who may be able to stop the destruction of Camelot…

…but to do that, they'll have to face an enemy even worse than Mordred.

His mother.

The Dark Excalibur will be the first of five books in the Blackfire series. Unlike my other, longer series, like Beaumont and Beasley, I don't actually intend to continue the Blackfire books beyond that. That isn't to say that Malcolm won't continue to play a significant role elsewhere in the Afterverse; only that the 1816 storyline will be coming to an end with Book 5. You'll understand why when we get to that point.

You see, the Blackfire series changes everything, starting with a staggering reveal at the end of Book 1…the solution to a mystery I've been teasing for some time now. The other books will unpack the repercussions of this reveal, leading to an explosive confrontation that will have far-reaching effects across practically all my other Afterverse storylines.

Who is Malcolm Blackfire, anyway?

You think you know. Perhaps you don't. Or perhaps you're simply asking the wrong question.

The Dark Excalibur will be released sometime before next spring. I'll confirm a more exact release date once the book is in the final stages of production.

There. I made all those Realmies jealous.

Except that this is all on the internet, and they can all see it where they are anyway…oh, never mind.

I am waiting for Malcolm Blackfire!! Yes!!

Thank you! πŸ˜€

I love it. Can’t wait (for my book budget to recover from my Realm Makers purchases).

LOL, thank you! πŸ˜€

I can’t wait to read this! It looks SO beautiful and amazing!
(You can actually ask the PFW authors that were here at Realm Makers what happened when I saw your email with the blog post.
I might have gasped and mini-screamed.)
Thank you for all your hard work and perseverance with your stories.

You’re very welcome! Thank you for all your encouragement and support! And mini-screams are definitely the reaction I was going for. πŸ˜€

I’m going to be putting you under a lot of strain with all the secret-keeping for this particular book. XD

She’s BRILLIANT at keeping all the secrets. It’s why we trust her with all the spoiler-y knowledge.

I have no idea how she does it! I’m going to have to sit on my hands to keep from demanding she tell me everything!

*comes back and sees people talking about me* YOU GUYS. You’re the best. πŸ˜€

Eeep! That cover is beautiful!! And that synopsis… :O
I can not wait to find out more about this series, and whatever sneaky stuff is up with Malcolm and everyone else!

Thanks so much! πŸ˜€

Thank you!! πŸ˜€

Wait, WHAT? What happened to Malcolm that he can’t remember who he is? I am very curious.

Spoilers. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

*joins you in the not-exactly-jealous-but-not-totally-unjealous-either-about-RM camp*

Also, I applaud you for diving into Camp NaNo. I am avoiding all things NaNo for who knows how long, and I do suspect my productivity will suffer slightly as a result. Having those strict deadlines do help with getting the drafts completed!

And as much as I love Malcolm, I’ll just say for my own part that I don’t want you to feel pressure to finish this. Yes, we’re all looking forward to it, but I strongly support your decision to re-do something that just wasn’t working for you. That’s so important (from the frustrated author side of me).

Thanks! Camp really helped me get this story into gear, but I’ve actually tweaked my goal to reduce the pressure on myself, since I’ve got a lot of other stuff on my plate for the rest of this month. I actually prefer Camp to regular Nano because you *can* tweak your goal when you want. I’m learning to balance between letting the deadlines help me and not letting them pressure me too much.

SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!!! Love the cover and the title and just everything!!!! Can’t wait to read it!

Thank you!! I’m really excited about it. πŸ˜€

:O <— Literally me reading the new title and DAT BLURB.

I LOVE the new title. The Thirteenth Knight was a lot of fun, but DARK EXCALIBUR? WHAAAAT. YAS.

AND THE BLURB. Malcolm lost his memory??? He has a MOTHER? (Okay, jk on that one. …Sorta.)

That cover is gorgeous too. Absolutely love the epic sword and castle in the background! THIS IS GONNA BE AMAZING!!!

BTW, you were missed at Realm Makers! But I probably won't be able to go next year due to finances among other things so I completely get it. Thank goodness they have one every year! There will always be another to look forward to, yeah? ^_^

Thank you!! I’m so glad you like it! πŸ˜€ I feel that it’s more exciting now than it was before. I decided I needed to pull out all the stops and really make it epic. LOL, that last line actually refers to Mordred’s mother…though yes, Malcolm did have one of those too. I think. XD And there will be some pretty humongous revelations with regard to Malcolm’s past.
I really regretted not being able to meet you in person again at RM. I won’t be going next year either because of money and logistics, but I am tentatively planning to go in 2021, provided that the location isn’t too far away from me. (I’ve heard rumors it will be a little more central-US this time around.) So maybe we’ll meet up then!

Ooooh. Mordred’s mother! Lololol. I see that now. I got so stuck on all the epic Malcolmness I guess my brain was still thinking of him. XD I’ll blame lack of sleep from RM. *grins*

Central America for RM would be GREAT! I kinda wish they’d do that every year since we’re all so spread apart. But YESSS. I’m holding on to hope for 2021, so that’d be great if we both got to go. ^_^

I really hope so! Maybe they’ll have it in Idaho and I can show all my Realmie friends were I live. XD But that’s a little far for most people, so maybe not, LOL. It’s not quite central.

Idaho would be interesting to see. But I’d say that about pretty much anywhere since all I’ve seen of the USA is a bit of Missouri, a tinier bit of Springfield, and Houston airport.
I want to see all the people- I mean places. Definitely meant to say places. Why’d I want to see people?

Just came back to your blog to stare at the lovely cover and now I’m analyzing every detail of that sword for clues.

There are clues…

I knew it! Question, did you custom design that sword? It’s beautiful and so much symbolism on it. I’m very intrigued.

Nope, stock photo. But I did alter it slightly to fit the plot. And it was remarkably appropriate for my purposes already.

That is awesome! I right-clicked on it to see if I could find out anything else about it (because I need to know more. πŸ™‚ I’m curious…) and all that it said, was that it was a poster. Which brings me to another point: I need posters of your covers because they are just so beautiful!

I think the rights for some of the stock images I use prevent me from making posters of the covers, sadly. But I’m glad you like them!

Ah…that makes sense. In which case, what I actually need is a couple of shelves so I can put all your books with the covers facing out so I can see them. I’m gonna have to work on that.

Good luck. πŸ˜€

I know this post is almost a year old, but I just found it, and-
